The regional rounds at Trivandrum (Venue – Loyola School, Trivandrum) and Ernakulam (Venue – YMCA Hall, Chittoor Road) will be held on 30th July 2011.

The former chief of ISRO said that he envied the students of Loyola, who were lucky to have studied in one of the most prestigious schools in the city. Shibu Baby John was vocal in sharing his memories of the school. He urged students to make good use of the facilities of the school, admitting that he himself couldn’t do the same.

The Chief Postmaster General, Shoba Koshy, released a ‘special cover’ in the school’s honour. Shoba spoke about the importance of special covers in the modern day. She said that the school was chosen for its meritorious achievements and its immeasurable contributions to the society.

Fr. Varghese Anikuzhy S.J. presented a brief history of the school. Fr. Joseph Edassery SJ, Vice Principal of Loyola, Fr. Joye James SJ, Rector of Loyola Institutions, Alex Ajith Philip, Secretary of LOBA, Shijo Sunny, Staff Secretary and Dr. Binoy S. PTA President also spoke at the function.

This was followed by a few cultural programs by the students. The icing on the cake was ‘Piece de resistance’ – a 25 minute documentary on the school. Apart from jogging down the memory lane, the documentary featured some of the former students who excelled in various walks of life, including award winning filmmaker Santosh Shivan, Nanotechnology Professor Pulickal Ajayan, adman Pratap Suthan, RCC Chief Paul Sebastian, former principal of Kottayam Medical College Jyothikumar and many others.

As you all know, Loyola is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The celebration is being heralded by a host of events being conducted by the school from June to November, 2011. A host of programs are being conducted by the school during this period. The events, which start with the release of a special ‘Golden Jubilee Logo, will conclude on the 26th of November with a closing ceremony.

Special mention goes out to the non teaching staff under the leadership of Joseph Uncle, and the LOBA volunteers, especially Mr George Thomas Panjikunnel who came all the way from Kochi.

The Executive Committee of LOBA has decided to sponsor the expenses of three Loyolites who are willing to attend the Patna Meet. Those of you from the 2000 – 2010 batches are cordially invited to make use of the opportunity. The sponsorship includes to and fro Third A/C tickets on train, and any other necessary expenditure. The sponsorship would be provided on first-come, first-served basis. So, hurry!

In addition to sponsoring all expenses of three members, the registration fees for all Loyolites attending the event will be incurred by LOBA.

Students from as far back at the 1969 batch of the school came to attend the annual event, held every Gandhi Jayanthi day. A few of the alumni, which met up in the evening, went on to have a game of football in memory of old times. A few of the older students were seen walking around the campus, taking in the changes that have come to the place and trying to find whatever remained from their times. Many of the school teachers also turned up to take part in the meetup.

Starting with the school song, in the assembly that gathered later, the group paid tribute to the members who had left them. LOBA President Manoj Kamnani, JAAI (Jesuit Alumni Association of India) President Santosh Rollands and LOBA Secretary Alex Ajith Philip spoke at the event. The open forum saw many of the old students come up to speak about their childhood memories of the school and how it had helped form their lives. The assembly went on to discuss about the 50th year celebrations of the school, set to happen next year, and the role of the association in such an event.

The association also put forward suggestions on their possible contributions to the school, which included a swimming pool, a new alumni block, etc. The principal, Fr. Varghese Anikuzhy SJ, clicked to launch the revamped alumni website (www.lobaglobal.com). The launch of the old boys association e-newsletter also followed. The letter will be mailed to all the members on a monthly basis.  With promises to meet up next year on the same day, the old students departed after a sumptuous dinner.
